N,N-Diethyl-2-(4-formylphenoxy)acetamide is an optical and fluorescent probe that can be used as a chemosensor. It has been found to have a fluorescence emission maximum at 514 nm in anhydrous dichloromethane. This compound is excited by UV light with energies of 4 eV or less and emits blue light with energies of 2.0 eV or more. The energy difference between the two peaks is 1.0 eV, which corresponds to the energy gap of the ground state and first excited singlet state in the molecular orbitals.
N,N-Diethyl-2-(4-formylphenoxy)acetamide has been studied theoretically and optimized for perturbation theory calculations. The optimized geometry shows that this compound has a planar structure with four hydrogen bonds in the form of three short hydrogen bonds and one long hydrogen bond (1.8 Å).
