1-Anthroylnitrile is an antiparasitic, antibiotic and antiviral agent that has been shown to be active against a wide range of microorganisms such as bacteria, fungi and viruses. 1-Anthroylnitrile is synthesized from the reaction of anthranilic acid with nitrous acid. It binds to the beta subunit of DNA gyrase which inhibits bacterial replication by preventing the formation of a new DNA strand. 1-Anthroylnitrile has also been shown to inhibit HIV-1 integrase, which prevents HIV from reproducing in human cells. This drug is not active against Gram negative bacteria such as Pseudomonas aeruginosa or Klebsiella pneumoniae.
