Descrição

Ascomycin (FK520) is a naturally occurring macrolide antibiotic that has immunosuppressive and anticancer properties. FK520 has been shown to inhibit the transcriptional regulation of both wild-type strains and cancer cells in vitro. It binds to the α subunit of the atp-binding cassette transporter, preventing the translocation of phospholipids from the cytoplasm into the mitochondria. Ascomycin also inhibits protein synthesis by binding to cyclohexane rings in bacterial proteins, which prevents their interaction with fatty acids. This leads to a decrease in membrane fluidity, causing cell death through apoptosis or necrosis.
