Ammonium tungstate is an inorganic salt that contains ammonium and tungsten ions. It can be synthesized by reacting sodium carbonate with oxides of tungsten, magnesium and ammonium. Ammonium tungstate is used as a reactant in the extraction of molybdenum from its ores. This compound has been shown to have thermal expansion properties, which may be due to the presence of ammonium ions in its structure. Ammonium tungstate also reacts electrochemically with hydroxyl ions, forming hydrogen gas at the cathode and oxygen gas at the anode. The reaction mechanism for this process is not well understood but it may involve the oxidation of ammonium ions to form nitrite ions.
