8-Chloroquinolin-7-ol is a protonated form of 8-chloroquinoline, which has an affinity for the fluorescence chromophore. The effects of substituents on the protonated compound's affinity for this chromophore were studied by measuring the fluorescence quantum yields of different compounds. The chlorination of 8-chloroquinolin-7-ol results in a decrease in its efficiency as a fluorescent probe. This is due to the increased steric hindrance that is caused by the chlorine atom and the hydroxyl group. 8-Chloroquinolin-7-ol is also found to be tautomeric, with both 8-chloroquinolin and quinoline as possible structures. It was found that the hydroxyquinoline form has a higher UV absorption than quinoline.
