Diethyl 1,4-Phenylenediacetate is a phthalic acid derivative that has been used as a synthetic intermediate in the production of polyesters. It is non-selective and reacts with many functional groups to form esters. This compound can be produced by reacting phenol with acetic anhydride or acetone in the presence of sulfuric acid. Diethyl 1,4-phenylenediacetate can also be prepared from terephthalic acid through oxidation reactions. Diethyl 1,4-phenylenediacetate is soluble in organic solvents such as benzene and chloroform. The chemical profile of this compound includes two significant peaks at m/z 178 and 210, which correspond to the ionized molecules C8H6O2 and C8H6O respectively.
