Cycloheterophyllin is a potent inhibitor of the enzyme cytosolic protein kinase C (cPK). It has been shown to be effective in diabetic patients with radiation-induced neutropenia. Cycloheterophyllin inhibits the production of reactive oxygen species and prevents collagen breakdown. Cycloheterophyllin also has inhibitory properties against glutamate, a neurotransmitter that plays an important role in neurological disorders. This compound has been shown to have potent inhibitory activity against toll-like receptor 4 (TLR4) which is involved in inflammatory responses. Cycloheterophyllin is found in plants and can be used as an agricultural food chemopreventive agent.
