Bisphenol A is a chemical compound that is used to make polycarbonates and other plastics. It is also found in some pharmaceutical drugs, such as the anti-ulcer drug cimetidine, and in many other products, including plastic water bottles, food containers, and dental sealants. The presence of bisphenol A has been linked to adverse effects on the reproductive system in women and may be associated with breast cancer. Bisphenol A can enter the body through ingestion or skin contact. It can be metabolized by bacteria into compounds that are more toxic than the original chemical.
