5-Azido-2-C-(hydroxymethyl)-5-deoxy-2,3-O-isopropylidene-D-ribono-1.4-lactone is used as a modification agent in oligosaccharides and polysaccharides. It is used to modify the carbohydrate structure of these compounds through glycosylation and methylation. 5-Azido-2-C-(hydroxymethyl)-5-deoxy-2,3-O-isopropylidene--D--ribono--1.4--lactone has been shown to be highly pure with a CAS number of 82577-09-8. This compound can be synthesized by reacting the acid with 2,3,5,6,-tetraacetic acid in chloroform solution or by reacting the acid with sodium azide in methanol solution at 0°C for 12 hours.
