Gallium selenide is an absorber for the sodium-carbonate laser, which has been shown to be one of the most efficient lasers in the world. This semiconductor material has been used in applications such as photovoltaic cells, infrared detectors, and high-efficiency solar cells. Gallium selenide also has thermal expansion properties that are similar to those of gallium arsenide and indium antimonide, making it useful in electronic devices. It is transparent to wavelengths between 300 nm and 3 µm and can be doped with boron nitride or copper to produce different colors of light emission.
