Molybdenum(IV) selenide is a binary compound with a low melting point, which can be easily synthesized in an electrochemical cell. It is composed of molybdenum and selenium, both of which are good semiconductors. The light emission property of MoSe2 has been shown to be dependent on the concentration of Se in the material. Molybdenum(IV) selenide has been used as a model system for the study of light transport properties and as an optical sensor that detects human serum albumin at concentrations below 10 μg/mL. In addition, Molybdenum(IV) selenide can be synthesized by laser ablation from boron nitride crystals and x-ray diffraction data have shown that it is a semiconductor with a band gap of 2.6 eV.
