Cephalosporin 87/359 is a cephalosporin antibiotic that inhibits the growth of microorganisms by binding to their bacterial ribosomes. It is active against a wide range of Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria, as well as fungi, viruses, and parasites. Cephalosporin 87/359 is a natural product that has been purified from cultures of Streptomyces cattleya. The chemical name for this impurity is 2-[2-(4-chlorophenyl)-5-methyloxazol-4-yl]acetamide (cefoxitin). Cephalosporin 87/359 can be used in both microbial and mammalian cell cultures in order to study the effects of different antibiotics on cells.
