Methyl 2-(3-formylphenoxy)acetate is an analog of etoposide, a chemotherapeutic drug. It is a methyl ester that has cytotoxic properties against cancer cells. Methyl 2-(3-formylphenoxy)acetate has been shown to be active against epidermoid carcinoma and nasopharyngeal cancer cells in vitro. High efficacy for the treatment of cancer has been observed when it is combined with other chemotherapeutics such as epirubicin, cyclophosphamide, or vincristine. Methyl 2-(3-formylphenoxy)acetate has been shown to have gaseous properties, which may allow it to enter the cell more easily than other chemotherapeutics.
