5,6,8,9-Tetrahydrobenzocyclohepten-7-one is a methylated analogue of benzocycloheptene. It is prepared by the reaction of dichlorocarbene (1) with 7-hydroxybenzocycloheptene (2). The deuterium isotope effect on the conformation of 5,6,8,9-tetrahydrobenzocyclohepten-7-one has been investigated using a spectroscopic technique. The reaction parameters have been optimized for this transformation to produce the desired product in high yield.
