2-(2-Methoxy-2-oxoethyl)-4-nitrobenzoic acid is an isoquinoline derivative that can be synthesized in a high yield from 2-chloro-4-nitrobenzoic acid. This compound can be used as a precursor for the synthesis of other compounds, such as chloramphenicol, aminopyrine and acetaminophen. The diazotization reaction is the first step in this process, which produces nitrogen gas as a byproduct. The cyclization reaction then yields an intermediate of the desired product. Hydrolysis follows to produce the desired product with methoxybenzylamine and trifluoroacetic acid. Chlorination then yields the final product with acetyl chloride and chlorine.
