Methyl 4-N-octyloxybenzoate is an experimental, chiral liquid crystal. It has been shown to circumvent the optical activity of chiral molecules by forming a crystalline structure that is optically inactive. The compound also forms a liquid crystal in which the long molecular chains are arranged in a macroscopic structure with dihedral angles between 0 and 180 degrees. These molecular chains are made up of two moieties that are chiral. Methyl 4-N-octyloxybenzoate has been used as a ferroelectric material due to its dipole moment.
