This bond is cleaved by an electron from another molecule, which causes the release of hydrogen gas. The product formed is benzyl alcohol, which reacts with sodium hydroxide to form sodium benzoate. In some cases, this reaction leads to a second one with the sodium benzoate, forming benzylbromide and sodium hydroxide. Benzylzinc bromide has been shown to inhibit lipid kinase in cells infected by HIV-1, making it possible for scientists to better understand how HIV-1 enters cells.
