It is an immunogenic agent that inhibits the transport of penicillin-binding proteins in vivo and prevents the synthesis of protein genes. (S)-3-Bromopropane-1,2-diol has been shown to inhibit the growth of Staphylococcus aureus by binding to penicillin-binding protein, which prevents it from synthesizing proteins needed for cell division. This drug has also been found to have antioxidative properties in vitro, which may be due to its ability to scavenge reactive oxygen species.
