Norfluoxetine is a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) that is metabolized to the active metabolite, norfluoxetine b-D-glucuronide. The metabolism of norfluoxetine b-D-glucuronide has been shown to be inhibited by estradiol. Norfluoxetine b-D-glucuronide also exhibits antioxidant activity, which may be related to its ability to modulate expression of genes encoding antioxidant proteins. Norfluoxetine b-D-glucuronide has been found in wastewater and wastewater treatment plant effluents, suggesting this drug may have an environmental impact. The transcriptome of organisms exposed to norfluoxetine b-D-glucuronide has been studied and it was found that there are some genes that are responsive to this drug.
