N-Acetyl-2-phenylthioneuraminic acid methyl ester 4,7,8,9-tetraacetate, also called per-O-acetyl-thiophenyl-N-acetylneuraminic acid methyl ester, belongs to the family of sialic acids. This neuraminic acid derivative, as well as other related compounds, such as, N-Acetyl-9-azido-9-deoxy-neuraminic acid, N-Acetyl-2-O-methyl-a-D-neuraminic acid and N-Acetylneuraminic acid dihydrate, act as ligands for the synthesis of many intermediates of sialylated carbohydrates.
