Scutellarin is a basic protein found in the plant Scutellaria lateriflora. It has been shown to have dna binding activity and concentration-time curves that are similar to those of breviscapine, which is known to induce apoptosis. The pro-apoptotic protein scutellarin has also been shown to be an anion radical scavenger and glucose-lowering agent. This compound may have potential as a natural therapeutic agent for coronary heart diseases, as it can inhibit apoptosis induced by breviscapine in cultured rat cardiac cells.
