Nitrotetrazolium blue chloride is a reactive dye that is used in the determination of antioxidants. It is used to measure the concentration of nitrate and nitrite ions, which are generated by reduction of nitric oxide (NO) by superoxide anion (O2-) in biological systems. Nitrotetrazolium blue chloride has been shown to scavenge anions such as peroxynitrite and hydroxyl radicals, which are highly reactive species that can cause damage to cells. Nitrotetrazolium blue chloride has also been shown to have protein synthesis-inhibiting effects. This can be seen by its ability to inhibit creatine kinase activity and myocardial infarct size in mice after exposure to radiation.
