3'-Azido-2',3'-dideoxyadenosine is an antiviral drug that inhibits the synthesis of DNA by inhibiting the enzyme ribonucleotide reductase. This drug is administered to patients with HIV as a cytostatic drug and has shown effectiveness in clinical trials. 3'-Azido-2',3'-dideoxyadenosine binds to the virus's RNA polymerase and prevents it from synthesizing viral proteins, which are needed for replication. It also binds to human telomerase and blocks its activity. Telomerase is an enzyme that helps cells reproduce, so inhibiting this enzyme will stop cell production. 3'-Azido-2',3'-dideoxyadenosine can be used to slow or stop the growth of cancer cells and has been shown to be effective against many types of tumors in animal studies.
