It is synthesized by the reaction of 2,4-diaminopyrimidine with b-L-arabinofuranosyl chloride. This product is soluble in water and ethanol. 9-(b-L-Arabinofuranosyl)guanine has antiviral activity against Herpes simplex virus type 1, herpes simplex virus type 2, cytomegalovirus, and Epstein Barr Virus. In addition to its antiviral activity, 9-(b-L-Arabinofuranosyl)guanine also has anticancer activity against human cancer cells and has been shown to inhibit the growth of leukemic cells in mice.
