L-2-Hydroxyglutaric acid is a metabolite of the Krebs cycle that has been shown to have chemoattractant properties. L-2-Hydroxyglutaric acid is a potential biomarker for diagnosis, cellular transformation, and cellular physiology. The physiological function of L-2-hydroxyglutaric acid is not yet clear but it may be related to energy metabolism and neuronal function. L-2-Hydroxyglutaric acid can induce mitochondrial membrane depolarization in tubule cells and this effect was observed in a model system. A lc-ms/ms method has been developed as a way to measure L-2 hydroxyglutaric acid in serum samples with high accuracy and sensitivity.
