- Omega-Hydroxy C17:0 Fatty Acid
17-Hydroxyheptadecanoic acid is a fatty acid that is found in marine macroalgae. It has been detected in several plant tissues, including the leaves of the tree species Pertusa, as well as in marine macroalgae. The compound has been analyzed and purified by preparative gas chromatography. This process requires the use of potassium dichromate to convert the hydroxy group to a carboxylic acid group, which enables it to be analyzed with a flame ionization detector. 17-Hydroxyheptadecanoic acid can also be synthesized from hydroxy palmitic acid and hydrogen peroxide, which are reacted together in a one-pot reaction. In this process, tosylates react with potassium dichromate in order to form an alkylating agent, which reacts with hydroxyl groups on the fatty acids and converts them into carboxylic acids.
