Nickel(II) perchlorate hexahydrate is a nickel salt that is soluble in methanol and water. It has been prepared by the reaction of nickel nitrate with perchloric acid and then heating the reaction mixture to obtain a crystalline product. Nickel(II) perchlorate hexahydrate has been shown to be an excellent reagent for the preparation of enantiopure tertiary amines, which are used in organic synthesis. Nickel(II) perchlorate hexahydrate can be used as an electrochemical electrode, exhibiting reversible oxidation-reduction reactions with hydrogen ions at potentials less than 0.7 V. This compound has also been used in structural studies and functional theory studies.
