Cyclohexyldiphenylphosphine oxide (CHP) is an organic solvent that has been used in the production of phosphites and metal salts. It can be synthesized by reacting a phenol with phosphorus pentoxide in the presence of a base or light. The reaction produces a mixture of products, including cyclohexyldiphenylphosphine oxide. CHP can be isolated by distillation, which allows it to be purified by fractionation. Cyclohexyldiphenylphosphine oxide is a colorless liquid that is soluble in both water and hydrocarbons. The solubility of this compound depends on its structure, with more complex structures being more soluble than simple ones.
