Promethazine is an antihistamine used to treat the symptoms of allergies and the common cold. Promethazine Sulfone is a metabolite of promethazine that has been shown to be responsible for its anti-inflammatory effect. It also has strong binding constants with human serum albumin, which may be due to hydrogen bonding interactions. Promethazine Sulfone is excreted mainly in urine as a result of metabolism by CYP2D6, which converts it into promethazine. Promethazine Sulfone inhibits chemiluminescence in a photomultiplier tube at a pH below 6.8 and hydrolysis by hydrochloric acid, but not at pH 7 or above.
