Brevianamide F is a sesquiterpene lactone that has been isolated from the marine sponge Acanthostrongylus sp. Brevianamide F is synthesized by a synthetase and trifluoroacetic acid. The synthesis of brevianamide F involves an iron-dependent reaction mechanism and in vitro assays have shown that it inhibits protein synthesis. Structural analysis of brevianamide F has revealed the presence of hydrogen bonds, which are necessary to maintain its shape. Hydroxyl groups are also present in this molecule, which may be important for biological activity.
