It was first synthesized in the early 1980s, and has been shown to be active against a variety of viruses, such as herpes simplex virus (HSV), varicella zoster virus (VZV), cytomegalovirus (CMV), hepatitis B virus (HBV), and Epstein-Barr virus (EBV). 5'-O-DMT-2'-O-(2-methoxyethyl)uridine inhibits the growth of cancer cells by interfering with DNA synthesis. This drug also has been shown to be an activator for DNA polymerases and is used as a building block for antiretroviral drugs.
