m-Tolyltetrazolium Red is a cationic dye that binds to mitochondrial inhibitors and has been used as an indicator of membrane potential. It is also used to study the effects of drugs on mitochondrial function by measuring ATP synthesis in isolated liver mitochondria. The electron transport system and oxidative phosphorylation are inhibited by m-Tolyltetrazolium Red, leading to a decrease in ATP production. This drug has been shown to energize mitochondria by inducing a transduction current. m-Tolyltetrazolium Red can be used as a fluorescent probe for studying mitochondrial membranes.
