Metasequoic acid A is a natural product that has been found to have anti-filarial properties. It has been shown to be effective against the parasite in animals, and in vitro tests have revealed its efficacy against microfilariae. Metasequoic acid A is a compound of distichum, which is an evergreen plant that grows in East Africa. The compound is extracted from the leaves of the plant and purified by fractional crystallization. The chemical structure of metasequoic acid A was determined by spectroscopic analysis. Metasequoic acid A inhibits the growth of filarial worms by binding to their surface receptors, preventing them from attaching to host cells. Metasequoic acid A also binds to diphenyltetrazolium dye, which may be useful for detecting infection levels.
