2’-O-Methy-2,5’-anhydro-5-methyluridine is a modified nucleoside with antiviral and anticancer properties. It is an activator of the antiviral response and has been shown to inhibit cancer cells from dividing. This compound is synthesized in an enzymatic reaction that converts 5-methyluridine to 2'-O-methylated uridine. The synthesis involves ribonucleotide reductase, which converts ribonucleotides into deoxyribonucleotides. 2' -O -Methy -2,5'-anhydro-5-methyluridine was originally identified as a novel monophosphate derivative in the 1960s and has been shown to be more effective than other nucleoside analogues.
