The reaction proceeds by nucleophilic attack of chlorine on the active methylene group to form a chloride ion, which then reacts with an alkyne or alkene to form an isoxazole or alkene respectively. 3-Chloroisothiazole has been found to be toxic, although it can be used in small amounts without significant side effects.
