Dichloro(1,10-phenanthroline)copper(II) is an organometallic compound that is used as a cancer treatment. It has been shown to be more reactive than copper(II) and exhibits tumorigenic properties in humans. Dichloro(1,10-phenanthroline)copper(II) also induces DNA damage and oxidative carbonylation. This compound is able to inhibit mitochondrial electron transport chain complexes I, II, III, IV, V, and ATP synthase with high potency. Dichloro(1,10-phenanthroline)copper(II) also inhibits the growth of cancer stem cells by targeting their mitochondria. This agent may be encapsulated for oral administration due to its low solubility in water.
