(R)-1-(4-Chloro-benzyl)-pyrrolidin-3-ol is a novel glutamate receptor modulator that is being developed for the treatment of epilepsy. The drug has been shown to have a low risk of inducing seizures and to reduce seizure frequency in animal models. It also reduces glutamate release and enhances GABAergic neurotransmission. (R)-1-(4-Chloro-benzyl)-pyrrolidin-3-ol was evaluated in a phase II trial as an adjuvant therapy for patients with resected temporal lobe epilepsy. The compound showed statistically significant reductions in seizure frequency after 12 weeks, without any serious side effects.
(R)-1-(4-Chloro-benzyl)-pyrrolidin-3-ol inhibits the enzyme dehydrogenase, which is responsible for synthesizing the neurotransmitter glutamate from its precursor molecule glutamine. This inhibition leads to reduced glutamate release and enhanced GABA
