(S)-1-Methoxy-3-phenyl-2-propylamine is a chiral, homochiral amine that can be prepared from the reaction of methylamine with phenylmagnesium bromide in the presence of an inert solvent. The (R) and (S) isomers are obtained by alkylation and separation of the magnesium salt. The magnesium salt can be prepared by reacting magnesium with malonate in solution in the presence of phosphine. This compound is used as a reagent to prepare amides or esters by condensation with acid chlorides, carboxylic acids, or alcohols.
