Hesperidin is a flavonoid that is found in the family of citrus fruits. Hesperidin has been shown to have anticancer properties, which may be due to its ability to inhibit the production of matrix metalloproteinase-9 (MMP-9). MMP-9 is known to promote tumor growth and metastasis by degrading components of the extracellular matrix. Hesperidin also has antioxidative properties, which may be due to its ability to scavenge free radicals. The antioxidant properties of hesperidin have been seen in a model system, where it was shown that hesperidin reduced the formation of reactive oxygen species and inhibited lipid peroxidation. In addition, hesperidin has been shown to have anti-inflammatory effects, as seen in a rotarod test on mice with carrageenan-induced paw edema. Hesperidin also showed cardioprotective effects in a study on spontaneously hypertensive rats
