The compound is synthesized from a reaction between p-toluenesulfonic acid and magnesium chloride to produce magnesium sulfate, which reacts with ethyl bromide to form spiro[2.5]octane-7-carboxylic acid. Spiro[2.5]octane-7-carboxylic acid can also be synthesized by reacting potassium tert butoxide with isobutyryl chloride in ether at room temperature. This reaction produces a Grignard reagent that reacts with p-toluenesulfonic acid in ether to form spiro[2.5]octane-7-carboxylic acid.
