1-Dodecylpyridin-1-ium chloride hydrate is a fluorescent probe that is used to detect the presence of inorganic compounds. It reacts with the acidity of an analyte, and emits light at a wavelength of 614 nm. This compound can be used as a cross-linking agent for polyvinyl alcohol. The optimal reaction temperature is 30°C, and the optimum pH is 7.5. 1-Dodecylpyridin-1-ium chloride hydrate may be biosynthesized by the reaction of pyridinium salts with chlorine in acidic conditions. It has been shown to have inhibition activity against bacterial RNA polymerase and DNA gyrase, although it does not inhibit protein synthesis or cell division.
