Alosetron is a peptide that acts as an antagonist to the 5-HT3 receptor. It has been shown to inhibit the release of neurotransmitters in the intestine, and it is used as a treatment for irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) with diarrhea. Alosetron binds to the 5-HT3 receptor on the nerve cells in the gut, which prevents stimulation of these cells by serotonin. The binding of alosetron to this receptor prevents serotonin from stimulating nerve cells in the gut, thereby reducing motility and pain.
