The compound has been shown to have antioxidative properties, which can protect cells from oxidative damage. This chemical has also been shown to have apoptotic effects on Caco-2 cells and plastids and mitochondrial effects on human erythrocytes. 3,5-Di-tert-butyltoluene also binds to nuclear DNA and cellular organelles, such as the mitochondria and plastids. The analog is a reactive molecule that forms adducts with nucleophilic sites such as thiols or amino groups in proteins or nucleic acids.
