2,2-Dimethyl-5-phenyl-1,3-dioxane-4,6-dione is a chemical compound that has been identified as an intermediate in the synthesis of a variety of organic compounds. It is produced by decarboxylation at high temperatures and thermolysis with isocyanates. The compound can be detected by spectroscopy with infrared or nuclear magnetic resonance techniques. It is also isolated from mixtures by crystallization or recrystallization from solvents such as ether or benzene. 2,2-Dimethyl-5-phenyl-1,3-dioxane 4,6-dione can exist as either the unsubstituted form (tautomer) or as the benzoyl derivative (matrix). The unsubstituted form is more stable than its corresponding derivatives and has been shown to undergo fragmentation reactions under certain conditions.
