The reaction is irreversible and can be used to form substituted derivatives that are irreversibly alkenylated. 3-Iodo-2,5-dimethylthiophene has a number of optical properties including photochromism and diffraction. It has been shown to be useful for the synthesis of novel materials with optical properties such as photochromism and diffraction.
