4-Phenyl-piperidine-4-carbonitrile is a potent inhibitor of stearoyl, which is the enzyme that catalyzes the last step in the synthesis of fatty acids. This molecule has been shown to inhibit acetylcholine release from nerve endings and to reduce the production of immunoglobulins by white blood cells. 4-Phenyl-piperidine-4-carbonitrile has been used as a radiotracer for positron emission tomography (PET) imaging studies to measure acetylcholine release in various tissues. The molecule also binds to antigens and can be used as an antigen in an immunoassay method.
