Glafenine hydrochloride is a drug that inhibits the uptake of organic anions by renal proximal tubule cells. It has been shown to reduce the rate of growth and increase cell mortality in multiwell tissue culture assays. Glafenine hydrochloride also reduces restenosis in rats after balloon injury, as well as inhibiting proliferation of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-infected corneal endothelial cells. The drug has also been shown to inhibit the growth of clonogenic cells in cultures exposed to anthranilate, a functional assay.
