Ethyl 2-(3,5-dimethoxyphenyl)acetate is a chloride ion with an unidentified molecular formula. It is synthesized from benzophenone and formic acid in the presence of trifluoroacetic acid. The product was purified by vacuum distillation and characterized by infrared spectroscopy and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR). The product can be used to produce tetracycline. Ethyl 2-(3,5-dimethoxyphenyl)acetate also has the potential to be used as a building block for synthesis of other compounds, such as an anthracene derivative, which is a molecule that can potentially serve as a fluorescent dye or laser material.
