The transformation of (E)-3-(naphthalen-2-yl)but-2-enoic acid is a chemical reaction in which a carboxylic acid undergoes an E1cB mechanism. It is a two-step process that begins with the nitration of the carboxylic acid. The resulting nitro compound is then hydrolyzed to produce the final product, cinnamic acid. This reaction is catalyzed by copper and tert-butyl nitrite, and it can be used to synthesize cinnamic acid derivatives such as 2,4,6-trinitrobenzene or 2,4,6-trinitrophenol.
