2-Phenyl-tetrahydrofuran is a polycarboxylic acid that has been shown to have an anti-aging effect on skin cells. It is structurally similar to the carboxylic acid of hyaluronic acid and has been shown to bind to the receptor for glutamate, a neurotransmitter. 2-Phenyl-tetrahydrofuran has also been shown in vitro to inhibit gyrase and topoisomerase IV, enzymes that maintain the integrity of bacterial DNA.
2-Phenyl-tetrahydrofuran is synthesized from phenol and acetaldehyde by reacting with chlorine gas. Its chemical structure consists of a methoxy group, hydroxyl group, and a carbonyl group. The molecular weight of this compound is 188.22 g/mol. This compound can be detected by nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy as well as infrared spectroscopy (IR
